Spotlight on CoTrain Apprentices - women in construction

Women account for only 11% of the construction workforce and just 1% of workers on site, according to Paul Hackett, from the Smith Institute. CoTrain, working alongside CITB, are committed to getting more women interested in construction as part of our efforts to tackle this issue. For #NAW2020, we want to showcase life as a CoTrain apprentice for Hannah Fleming, who is on a placement with Midas and proving to be a great role model for all.
Hannah Fleming started on site with Midas in October 2018 and is attending Southampton City College, doing a Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship. Hannah had a background related to design and wanted to build on her skills and train as a carpenter. She is achieving a lot at college and embraced the work she has been given on site, including work on office fit outs and kitchens. She has integrated excellently with the Midas team, where she is well respected by her supervisors and colleagues, showing enthusiasm, attention to detail and is always prepared to go the extra mile. Hannah’s supervisor, Iain MacDonald, commented, 'Hannah has and continues to be a major asset to both Midas and Cumberland Place'.
Hannah has expressed her appreciation about the opportunity: 'Working with CoTrain and Midas has been an excellent experience. Through my apprenticeship, I've been able to discover my true potential in the construction industry. With the support and opportunities CoTrain provided, I have been able to start a career that I am proud of.'
Hannah is keen to pursue Level 3 as her next step - as she progresses along her career path.
